C.Maxx Stevens was born in Wewoka, Oklahoma, which is a part of the Seminole Nation region, and grew up in Wichita, Kansas.  Educated at Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence and at the State University and the United Welding Institute in Wichita, she completed an MFA at Indiana University in Bloomington.  She has previously taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, White Mountain Academy of Arts, and the Institute of American Indian Arts.  In the late 1980s she worked as a theatrical artisan for Whichita’s Music Theater, where she gained the knowledge and experience she would later use to create installation.

The exhibition is a story about the artist, her family, identity, and history.  Seven people read the artist’s script, each in their own storytelling way.  As you sit and experience the installation there are multiple voices, shadows, and images that express the complex dimensionality of the artist.
