Performance Art through Raven Chacon's American Ledger no.1

drawings that make up a music score

Event Date

Location
Gorman Museum of Native American Art, 181 Old Davis Road, Davis CA 95616

The students in Music 198 will present a public performance of Raven Chacon's American Ledger no.1 as part of Chacon's residency at UC Davis in February 2026. The class will work collaboratively to decide the details of how we perform the piece. The second part of the quarter will be a reflection on the process and performance, and an opportunity to research other works of performance art or to design your own. This is an excellent opportunity for students, especially those in the Composition or Independent tracks, who are looking for some inspiration for their senior projects.

American Ledger No. 1 is a narrative score for performance, telling the creation story of the founding of the United States of America. In chronological descending order, moments of contact, enactment of laws, events of violence, the building of cities, and erasure of land and worldview are mediated through graphic notation, and realized by sustaining and percussive instruments, coins, axe and wood, a police whistle, and a match.

The event is part of Raven Chacon's residency with The Manetti Shrem California Studio.
