Memo / Artist Statement
Vangie produces polished redware, black-on-white sgraffito jars, seed pots, melon bowls, wedding vases, canteens, pitchers and miniatures. Vangie is also celebrated for her unique freehand designs of delicate and detailed hummingbirds, water serpents, flowers and feathers. Vangie’s singular trademark is an eagle feather which signifies her clan origin. Vangie creates pottery to arrest the viewer’s attention enough to experience her living art and one-of-a-kind designs. Vangie only uses natural materials and paints.
Biography
Vangie Tafoya became an active potter in 1982-present. Vangie was born in Jemez Pueblo (Walatowa). She is San Ildefonso and Jemez. Vangie comes from a long lineage of potters starting with her grandmother Maria Sanchez Colaque and relative Maria Martinez. Vangie is the wife of David Tafoya, and is the mother of Brenda Tafoya, Helen Tafoya Henderson and Tyron Tafoya. Vangie states that her grandmother, Maria Sanchez Colaque served as her inspiration and moving spirit behind her passion to continue the family tradition of producing pottery.
