Tomasita Montoya, Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan Pueblo) jar

Tomasita was one of the original seven potters in the 1930’s “San Juan Revival”. She is well-known for her incised polychrome redware jars, bowls and vases. She decorated her pieces with motifs such as clouds, kival steps, triangular fret and fine line hatching. She occasionally used micaceous clay which added a nice geometric texture. Her work can be found in anthropological museums and in the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha. Dominguita Sisneros is Tomasita Montoya’s daughter and is well-known and praised for her deeply carved and incised patterns and designs paired with classic pueblo imagery.
