Stella Shutiva, Acoma Pueblo corrugated wedding vase

Stella Shutiva was a popular potter who specialized in recreating the corrugated wares from prehistoric times. Stella is also known for her polychrome jars, bowls, double vases, wedding vases, canteens, plates, human figures, white corrugated owls and animal figures. Jessie Garcia, Stella’s mother, was credited for reviving the corrugated ware and inspiring Stella to carry on her tradition. In 1973, Stella demonstrated pottery making at the Smithsonian Institution where she also studied its collection of Acoma pottery with a goal to pair the sensation of the past with contemporary designs.
