Biography
Rufina Trujillo was originally from the Acoma Pueblo, but then married a Cochiti Pueblo man and moved to Cochiti. In 2007 she passed away from asthma complications. Cochiti potters work mainly in the black on cream style and are infamous for their wide variety of forms. Cochiti designs include cloud and rain motifs and abstract floral designs. However, the Cochiti potter’s unique figurative forms further distinguishes them from other Rio Grande Pueblos. Cochiti potters began molding canteens with applique lizards and throughout the 1880s potters produced stunning standing human figures that were inspired by and based on the carnival characters during their time.
