Rochelle Huia Smith, Huia Thompson, Wharetangata Series

Rochelle Huia Smith’s father is Samoan and Maori, and her mother is Maori with Scottish, French, and Irish ancestry. She was of the generation Kōhanga Reo had begun. Her experience inspired her to earn her Master of Art and Design (’06) from Auckland University of Technology, writing her thesis on the exploration of photographic sovereignty that utilizes whakawhanaungatanga, a Maori way of identifying common, established through Maori language educational networks.
