Biography
Pauline Romero (b. September 25, 1962) is from the Jemez Pueblo and is the daughter of Persingula R. Tosa and the granddaughter of Lupe Romero. Persingula taught Pauline the basics of traditional pottery making while also encouraging her to continue the family tradition in order to help keep the long-lived tradition going. Pauline has been producing pottery since she was fifteen years old and has been hand coiling pottery for over 15 years. She continues to implement the traditional methods of pottery making. However, Pauline etches on her pottery pieces which contrasts with her refined, polished work. Pauline began making nicely shaped bowls and vases using the soft, red slip of the Jemez and would then scratch designs into her pieces using the sgraffito technique. Her favorite and most common designs were butterflies and feathers. Then, Pauline began making melon shapes in both the red and whiter slips—sometimes she would combine the two slips. Currently, Pauline is combining all her techniques and specializes in polished redware pots, bowls and wedding vases using red and buff slips and sgraffito panels.
