Biography
Mitchell has been making birch bark baskets for all of his adult life. He begins the process with a careful search for birch bark in the North Maine woods. Then he dries the bark and laces it into a variety of bowls and baskets in traditional styles, including the popular miniature bark canoes.

Mitchell has taught several workshops including one on Indian Island where he grew up on the Penobscot Indian Reservation. In 1994, he learned brown ash basketry as an apprentice to a Penobscot basketmaker.
