Mike J. Brown, Killer Whale

Michael (Mike) J. Brown was born 1955 in Old Masset on Haida Gwaii. He was mainly brought up by his Uncle Percy Brown who was a well known Haida singer. Deeply immersed in the Haida culture, Mike started carving argillite at a very early age. He was mainly inspired by his grandfather Captain Andrew Brown, a well known and respected master carver and personality. Mike is a self-taught carver and painter who works with argillite, silver, gold, drums and paddles. Today he lives and works in Queen Charlotte City as well as in the South Moresby Wilderness Park Gwaii Haanas`` on Haida Gwaii. (Sprits of the West Coast, Native Art Gallery)
