Memo / Artist Statement
I am always working on being part of home in my work. Home being the Navajo Nation.
I live in Colorado right now and that is home too.
I was hosted by these three brave and beautiful people from the north.
Each person in their own way showed me a part of their home that has stayed with me to this day.
I wanted to make a small map like print that focuses on the north.
The three that inspired this work are Anna Hoover, Sonya Kelliher-Combs and Da-ka-xeen Mehner. I first came to know Anna and this series had an earlier version that I just called Anna Hoover. I admire her for drive and respectful way and she helped me see more of her goals in life at an early age and that has inspired me ever since that time. Sonya invited me to her land and used a grant she received to bring me there to share printmaking with her community. What an amazing act! She is a leader in all aspects of that word. Da-ka took me into his teaching and learning space while I was a visitor and hosted me with food and stories from that part of their land. Each artist walks their own path that I find beautiful. They understand what home means. I believe in this portfolio we all know this word home.
