Mary Cain, Santa Clara Pueblo red carved rain serpent design jar

Mary Cain was the daughter of Christina Naranjo and was a Santa Clara Pueblo Potter. Her Tewa name was Blue Rain. Mary was the grandmother of Tammy Garcia, a famous Santa Clara artist who owns and operates Blue Rain Gallery in Santa Fe. Mary made redware and blackware since 1930 and was taught by her mother, Christina Naranjo and her grandmother, Sara Fina Tafoya. Mary specialized in traditional hand coiled black on black or red Santa Clara hand polished pottery, with carvings of water serpents and bear paws. Mary has been included in numerous publications such as: Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery, Talking with Clay, Southwest Pottery Anasazi to Zuni and Pueblo Indian Pottery 750 Artist Biographies. Mary has also received several awards such as: The Santa Fe Indian Market 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, Eighth Northern Pueblo Exhibit 1st and 2nd place and New Mexico State Fair 1st place.
