Biography
On July 27, 1927, Marie Romero was born into the Jemez Pueblo, the daughter of Joe and Persingula Gachupin. She was a member of the Corn Clan. Maria was inspired by her grandparents to continue the family tradition of pottery making when she was 8 years old. Maria specialized in several aspects of pottery-making—from storytellers to all different shapes and sizes of pottery. Maria collected clay from a sacred area within the Jemez Pueblo. Then, she mixed, hand coiled, shaped, painted and fired the pieces outdoors using traditional methods. Then Maria used natural colors to paint her pieces. Maria received numerous awards from different venues: 3rd place at the 1999 Santa Fe Indian Market, Eighth Northern Arts and Crafts Show, Gallup Intertribal Arts and Crafts Show, and awards from the New Mexico State Fair. Maria was also included in several publications: Southern Pueblo Pottery 2,000 Artist Biographies, Southwestern Pottery Anasazi to Zuni, Talking with the Clay and American Indian Pottery 2nd Edition.
