Lucy Mora, Mata Ortiz fish motif pot

Lucy Mora grew up in a small village of Mata Ortiz. When she was young, Lucy’s mother told her that she needed to make pots in order to have a happy future—Lucy took her mom’s advice and studied how to create beautiful pots. Lucy’s pottery is collected all over the Southwest. Lucy collects clay near her home in Mata Ortiz, refines it and then creates forms that are full, rotund and her pieces always exude energy. Lucy tends to paint designs of birds, fish, and insects over the surfaces of her pieces.
