Most of the older Choctaw weavers learned the skill by observing their Parents or grandparent weave baskets. They learned the skill because they wanted to learn it, not because they were told that they should learn it. There was no active 'teaching of the skill by the parents or grandparents. Most of the weavers learned the skill at a very early age, usually around ten or eleven years. Lela Solomon stated, "I started making baskets when I was still very young, so whenever I wanted to make what I wanted,
to make, I was very pleased to make them even if it's not that good."
