Biography
After journeying from Japan to Los Angeles in 1973, Kawano first came to Navajoland in March 1974, when he arrived in Gallup, N.M., on a Greyhound bus. Shortly after traveling to Arizona, Kawano met Carl Gorman in Window Rock. As they got to know one another, Kawano learned of his assignment as a Code Talker during World War II.

After attending his first Navajo Code Talkers Association meeting with Gorman's invitation, Kawano began to befriend this influential group of men. In 1980, Kawano became the Navajo Nation Official Photographer, and in 1984, he was a staff photographer for Navajo Times Today. In 1987, he began photographing the Navajo Code Talkers for his book, "Warriors: Navajo Code Talkers," which features an additional 50-plus portraits.

In the spring of 1995, he and his Navajo wife and their daughter left the reservation because of her U.S .Air Force duties. But they returned, and today Kawano lives in Window Rock and continues to capture the lives of the Navajo people.
