Memo / Artist Statement
The pot you have in your collection is a story from my childhood. Santa Clara Pueblo is located about 20 miles from Los Alamos. My older cousins would tell me stories about unusual deer in the local mountains they saw when hunting. Sometimes with two heads and five legs. I imagined so many different style of deer and designed the pot with them. The rays coming down the pot represent the mysterious elements coming down from Los Alamos.
Biography
My name is Jody Naranjo, I am from Santa Clara Pueblo and make traditional but somewhat contemporary pottery . My family are all artists and grew up knowing I would carry on this tradition. From gathering clay and sifting it, to hand building, polishing and pit firing, I follow the process which my mother and grandmother taught me. Over the last 40 years, I’ve modernized a bit. Unusual shapes, bright colors and different designs. I’ve incorporated my own life as a mother and Pueblo woman into my designs. I love storytelling.
