Biography
Jo Peters (Mar 8, 1923-Oct 12, 2011) was born at 3 Dollar Bar, Somes Bar, CA on the Salmon River and was the second out of eleven children of Frank and Maggie Grant Sr. Jo Peters was a native of the Salmon Klamath and the Rogue Rivers and the St. Francis Abenaki of Quebec, Canada. She grew up and attended grade school in Somes Bar, CA and went to high school in Red bluff and Etna, CA. She moved to Eureka, CA after high school. She eventually settled in Hoopa, CA where she would stay for the rest of her life.

Jo Peters was an extremely talented woman who treasured her family’s heritage, and knowledge and legacy of Herbal Medicine and Doctoring. In 2010, Jo Peters along with Beverly Ortiz published After the First Full Moon in April: A Sourcebook of Herbal Medicine from a California Indian Elder. Throughout the book, Peters describes and shares her broad, lifelong cultural and plant knowledge which includes her personal and tribal history, gathering ethics, and instructions for the reader in medicinal and plant food preparations along with an illustrated catalog of the uses and portion doses for over 160 plants. This book represents Peter’s way of sharing her tradition in the way she wanted along with her own spiritual beliefs. Peters was one of the founding members of the California Indian Basketweavers Assoc. Jo Peters left an unforgettable, positive impact in the world.
