Biography
Robert James Schoppert was born in 1947 in Juneau, Alaska and died in 1992 in Ojai, California. His father was German and his mother Tlingit. During his life, Schoppert became one of the most prodigious and influential Alaskan artists of this century. He described himself as an innovator, who used traditional Alaskan Native images, took them beyond their original design and purpose, and created art pieces that were true to his own artistic vision. As a visual artist, a poet, and essayist, Schoppert was an eloquent spokesperson for Alaskan Native artists, and indeed for artists everywhere.
