Memo / Artist Statement
This coil plaque features Palhik Mana, the Butterfly Maiden, a woman dancer. The Butterfly Dance, a traditional social dance of the Hopi Pueblo, is held in August after the gathering of the harvest. It is a thanksgiving dance for the harvest, primarily for corn crops, and features dancing by young Hopi Pueblo maidens wearing elaborate headdresses.
