Biography
Elmer Red Starr was born into the Sioux Nation. He married Harriet Tafoya and lived at Santa Clara Pueblo with her. He learned to use Santa Clara clays and methods to make his pieces starting in the 1970s. His decorations include traditional Sioux sgraffito designs, sometimes with Santa Clara designs. Red Starr signed pottery as: Red Starr, followed by an arrow under which is the word Sioux, and a number (example: 83 TY-13. The 83 indicates the year it was made).
