Memo / Artist Statement
Kachin Mana, the Corn Maiden Kachina, embodies beauty, grace, and the sacred gift of corn which is central to Hopi life and ceremony. Kachin Mana represents fertility, abundance, and the nurturing power of women. Often seen accompanying other katsinas in dances, her presence brings blessings of growth, harmony, and the continuation of cultural and agricultural traditions.
Biography
Derrick Hayah is from First Mesa, the village of Walpi, and is of the Rabbit and Tobacco clans. He has been carving for nearly 16 years and learned from his uncles, including Gary Hayah. He is also the older brother of Godfrey Hayah.
