Biography
Delores Lewis is from the Acoma Pueblo and is a daughter of the renowned Lucy M. Lewis. Lucy taught her the art of traditional pottery making. Dolores is inspired by the Anasazi, her ancient ancestors. She has been an active potter since the 1950s and works with the Anasazi Revival black-on-white polychrome pieces. Dolores is known for her classic shapes and her intricate, finely painted designs. Some of the traditional designs the Lewis family replicates are the deer pot, the lightning bolt pattern, and several variations of Mimbres designs. Delores continues her mother’s legacy of traditional imagery on her ceramics. She is related to Emma Lewis Mitchell and Carmel Lewis (sisters) and her brother, Drew Lewis. Delores has been mentioned in several publications ranging from Pueblo & Navajo Contemporary Pottery by Berger and Schiffer to Pueblo Pottery: 2,000 Artist Biographies by Gregory Schaaf, to Fourteen Families in Pueblo Pottery by Rick Dillingham and Indian Art Magazine.
