Biography
Carmelita Simplicio, Zuni Pueblo, active 1960s-1977+: nugget, cabs, silver leaf, stampwork jewelry. Carmelita is known for her bolos, bracelets, earrings, necklaces, pendants, pins, rings, and watchbands. (Schaaf, Vol III).

Carmelita Simplicio was born in 1939 and was most active in jewelry-making during the 1960s and 1970s.She is part of the renowned Simplicio silversmith family of the Zuni Pueblo. These earrings are a classic Simplicio design. They feature gorgeous natural Turquoise nuggets set in a sterling silver leaf design. Master jeweler Dan Simplicio (1917 - 1969) introduced these elements in Zuni jewelry, and the younger members of his family have continued the tradition. What distinguishes Carmelita's work are the curved leaves with stamp work, the scalloped bevel edges and the use of Gothic print in her hallmark "Simplicio Sterling". These features also help date the earrings to around late 1960s - early 1970s, as the scalloped bevel design became less popular from the 1970s on. In a lot of ways, Carmelita's use of nugget stone settings and leaves makes it more similar to Navajo silver-work.
