Carla Claw Nampeyo, Hopi Pueblo sgraffito Mana Kachina design miniature seed jar

Carla is a Hopi-Tewa and she is from the First Mesa village of Shungopavi. Carla is the daughter of the celebrated Hopi-Tewa potter Thomas Polacca, is the granddaughter of Fannie Polacca, and is the Great-Granddaughter of Nampeyo. Her family showed and taught her the traditional methods of pottery making—the golden hued bowls with a fine line painting. Carla continued to reproduce these styles but also developed a rich style which included a chocolate slip with animal and Kachina carved designs. Carla is also well known for her traditional polychrome pieces.
