Biography
Bertha Gachupin was born in the Jemez Pueblo in 1954 and is a member of the Zia and Corn Clan and her pottery is placed into the Pueblo category. Gachupin is a Pueblo potter and uses clay and white sand to create her pottery pieces. Gachupin has continued to only use traditional methods to create her pottery and is a master of hand coiling, stone polish and has mastered traditional firing which is the final step for her pottery. Gachupin has a unique pottery style which includes using a red slip on pottery and then applying melon swirls which are cut into the pottery. She then adds details to the final products with corn painted designs which signify her clan. Gachupin was inspired to learn and develop the skills of pottery making by Persingula Gachupin, her grandmother. She was also inspired to continue her family tradition of hand coiling pottery. She has created a wide range of pottery pieces which includes wedding vases, melon bowls and regular bowls in varying sizes. Her artwork can be found at the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Jemez Red Rocks Art & Crafts Show.
