Biography
Anderson Peynetsa has been actively creating Zuni pottery since the 1980s. His creates traditional black-on-redware pieces, polychrome seed pots, jars, ollas, bowls, canteens, and duck effigy pots. Anderson is the son of Charles and Wilma Peynetsa and is the brother of Agnes and Prescilla Peynetsa. When he works with his wife, Avelia Peynetsa, he signs his pieces “AA Peynetsa”. Anderson was one of the best students who learned the art of pottery making from Jennie Laate—he took his first class in eighth grade. From the mid-1980s, Anderson has shown his work at the Santa Fe Indian Market, the Tucson Fine Arts Museum, the Zuni Show at the Museum of Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, the Heard Museum and at the Eighth Northern Indian Pueblos Show. When Anderson creates his pieces, he includes his favorite designs such as: rainbirds, frogs, lizards, deer with heartlines, rosetts, water serpents and salanders. Anderson is considered one of the best contemporary Zuni pottery painters and is well-known for his meticulous, precise fluid line work. Anderson is also a talented sculptor—he applies relief figures on some of his pottery. Anderson’s pieces always illustrate his bold, creative and innovative styles and designs.
