Stamps Joe, Al Joe, A over J, AJ inside circle, AJ inside horseshoe.
Active ca.1972-present. Winslow, AZ.
When Alfred Joe started in the 1970s, the jewelry market was booming. He called it the "good old days." He owned a shop, Little Squash in Winslow, AZ and had dozens of Navajo silversmiths working for him. He commented, "now the pieces have to be finer and set with quality gems. The artistic ability of jewelers has really developed, and there's lots of competition."
Alfred explained his style and techniques, "I view my jewelry as contemporary with traditional Navajo designs. I use different metalsmithing techniques...My jewelry is always evolving, because I'm always thinking of new designs...I believe this has kept people interested in my jewelry." (Schaaf 2003:194)
