Memo / Artist Statement
"Don't Shoot, Diego is a lithograph depicting a Spanish soldier dissuading Conquistador Diego de Vargas from firing at Pueblo women huddled in the doorway of a church. This is one of Romero's most powerful compositions. To the view steady enough to look into the faces of the women - their eyes wide with fear - the thickness of terror and torment evident in the image becomes nearly tangible. We can almost detect the faint scent of smoke trailing from the soldiers' rifles, almost hear the horses that surely stomp about in the background." Diaz, R., Cochiti Potter Diego Romero, First American Art Magazine, Winter 2015/16, No. 9: p.71.
